When Fifth Harmony announced their hiatus earlier this year, many wondered if any of the four girls would make it as a solo act. Camila Cabello, who left the group about a year and a half prior, had clearly proven herself capable of maintaining a solo career with a hot 100 number one song and album. This summer, a new star began to emerge as the song “Love Lies” became popular. Normani Kordei, known mononymously as Normani, collaborated with Khalid for a number 9 hit on the billboard charts.
After many months of waiting for a solo track, this past Monday Normani released two new songs with help from producer Calvin Harris. “Checklist” is a bounce song that seems natural for Normani’s voice. Featuring Wizkid, this song feels as if it could be played at any club. The second single, “Slow Down,” however, is where Normani’s vocal prowess shines. The song starts like a traditional club anthem, literally “slows down” for the chorus and then speeds up again. The way she commands and controls the rhythm of the song are masterful. Her confidence is reminiscent of Rihanna; it feels as if Normani could be given any song and make it a hit.
Last night, Normani performed her first solo set live in Brooklyn as part of a TIDAL benefit concert. She sang a previously unheard song, “Waves” (ft. 6LACK), “Love Lies” and “Checklist.” To me this performance solidified Normani as a true pop star. She channeled her inner “Sasha Fierce” as she commanded the stage. She has it all: the look, effortless vocals and killer dance moves. Watch her performance below to see for yourself; Normani is definitely one to watch out for.
